Opening Speech
CCPR 2022
Dr. Faisal Yousif Al Anezi,
Vice President for Academic Affairs
Dear Distinguished colleagues and participants,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you on behalf of Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University to the PMU virtual conference on conflict prevention and resolution.
This conference is taking place virtually not just because we all have become accustomed during the last two years to online meetings and to communicating with colleagues around the globe remotely. Rather, technology has enabled us to organize more scholarly events while at the same time reducing our carbon footprint consistently with PMU’s commitment to sustainability in its academic and administrative operations and processes.
Indeed, the theme of this conference on conflict prevention and resolution links with our broader commitment to the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs). One strategic goal of PMU is to increase its contribution towards the achievement of the SDGs through high quality research, education, and serving the local community while also strengthening PMU’s contribution through international initiatives and collaborations. Sustainability has also been a guiding principle in the process of curriculum review and development to ensure accessible, quality education.
Dear colleagues,
The tracks of this conference tackle salient issues that affect the fulfillment of the UN global goals.
These goals include eradicating poverty, ensuring quality education, reducing inequalities, and promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions. Our conference spans a variety of issues that turn on those goals. We are fortunate to have scholars and researchers who will discuss the impact of conflicts on affected societies from economic and political perspectives. Also, some risks associated with the fourth industrial revolution concerning cybersecurity and crime will be examined. We look forward to discussing proposed legal solutions at both the national and international levels.
Dear colleagues and participants,
The United Nations’ global goals also emphasize quality education. While the quality and equality of education have been facing challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased them. The conference will highlight some of those challenges.
Resolving conflicts is not only about setting things right. Rather, it is about rebuilding relationships that depend on promoting tolerance, respect, and mutual understanding among individuals and groups. Conflict prevention and resolution depend therefore on effective communication to which disinformation constitutes an obstacle. Speakers will address the history of disinformation and its impact in a social context.
Further, the role of law in conflict resolution is not to be overlooked. Besides the courts, the law recognizes means of settling disputes out of court, better known as alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation. Mediation could be conducive to rebuilding and transforming relationships between individuals and groups in commercial matters but also in general community mediation offered by volunteers and not-for-profit organizations. Separate conference sessions will elucidate the role of courts and ADR in resolving conflicts and promoting understanding among individuals and groups.
Again, I am delighted to welcome all of you to this virtual conference. I would like to thank all our guest speakers and researchers who have contributed to this event. Also, I would like to thank the conference committees and the PMU team who have made this conference happen.
I wish you an enjoyable conference and enriching debates.
Thank you.
